The Number Resource Organization (NRO) has reiterated the need to enhance efforts to deploy and adopt IPv6 around the world. The organization said IPv6 is a critical factor in global telecommunications and will determine the stability of the Internet in the near future given the impending exhaustion of IPv4.
Speaking on behalf of the NRO, the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) Director General Paul Wilson said the global community of Internet users have to prioritise IPv6 deployment.
“The main driver of this transition has to do with IPv4 space exhaustion, and yes we will soon run out of IPv4 addresses in all regions. Preparation for IPv6 deployment is imperative, and we as a global community of Internet users have a duty to make this happen,” said Mr Wilson while addressing delegates at the World Telecommunication/ICT Policy Forum (WTPF) in Geneva, Switzerland. “We all need to work harder, and together, to generate the momentum that IPv6 needs to be successfully deployed in all existing and future networks.”
Mr. Wilson explained he had provided the WTPF with a list of specific measures that governments and businesses can take to speed up IPv6 deployment. This list includes specifying IPv6 requirements in all ICT procurement activities, requiring IPv6 plans from ICT service and product providers, promoting IPv6 skills development within ICT professions and industry and ensuring that all online services are accessible via IPv6.
“I do thank the ITU for creating this opportunity to include views from stakeholders in their work. We have appreciated being part of the Informal Experts Group of the WTPF and we are calling the ITU to make these proceedings even more inclusive so all stakeholders voices are heard in the spirit of the WSIS and the Tunis Agenda,” said Mr Wilson.
