WSIS
The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was a two-phase United Nations-sponsored summit on information, communication and the information society. One of its aims was to bridge the global digital divide by improving access to the Internet in the developing world. The NRO was committed to the WSIS process from the outset, with representatives of the five RIRs participating in WSIS processes, attending regional preparatory meetings and official Prepcoms, as well as in both summits. In addition, the RIRs organised and participated in numerous parallel meetings and information sessions.
WSIS Phases
The first phase took place in Geneva, hosted by the Government of Switzerland, from 10-12 December 2003. 175 countries adopted a Declaration of Principles and Plan of Action during this phase. The second phase of WSIS took place in Tunis from 16-18 November 2005, where the NRO joined the Internet Pavilion. Underling the importance of the process, many Internet industry organizations attended and co-hosted the pavilion, including:
- The Number Resource Organization (NRO)
- Internet Society (ISOC)
- Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
- The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
- Council of European national Top Level Domain Registries (CENTR)
- London Internet Exchange (LINX)
- African ISP Association (AfrISPA)
