ICANN Gives AFRINIC Provisional Recognition as the Regional Internet Registry for the African Region

On 11 October 2004, ICANN approved the provisional recognition of AFRINIC as the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for the African region. AFRINIC is the emerging RIR that has been proposed by the African community to act in its best interests for the purpose of managing the IP addressing in the continent.

The Number Resource Organization (NRO) will continue to work with AFRINIC and the other RIRs to support its emergence as a formally recognised RIR. Formal recognition is expected in 2005.
